To doubt, to consider everything that we know as fallible and to question respected ideas is a long-known fundamental aspect of scientific progress and the uttermost respect for our intellectual heritage. The fact that this age will at some point be considered primitive should be basis for peace of mind to doubt the greatest ideas of our times like ESG and Sustainable Development. Questioning these practices does not mean discrediting them but finding the strengths in them for building next-generation models.

Various reports from global agencies point to minimal and stalling progress for 30% of SDGs (UN Inter-Agency & Expert Group report on SDGs indicators, 2024), broken climate targets with record carbon emissions of 41.6 million tons in 2024 (WMO) and the 2023 Emissions gap report pinpoints industrial processes as the main source of emissions. It is logical to find fault with the current frameworks

Given the materialistic nature of man. It will be difficult to solve environmental sustainability without solving corporate sustainability or let’s call it industrial processes (main culprit) sustainability. Industrial processes from multinationals to backdoor SMEs are at the interface of society and nature to solve social needs or social sustainability by way of artefacts. It was therefore our calculated thinking that the next generation framework should boldly deal with these three sustainabilities in a self-contained manner at any level of industrial action.

It is this line of thinking that inspired a breakthrough six-year sustainability theory building research at One Sustainability under an intellectual war cry termed Postmetricism which sought to proceed beyond the current ESG metrics disclosure approach, to a more holistic and practical sustainability framework. This work is basic research in Sustainability Science, a relatively new field shaping up in the global north and slowly being adopted in other parts of the world. As such it needs philosophy to organise it, a requirement noted by a few other scholars. Establishing Philosophy of Sustainability was therefore a part of the research.

An analysis of worldviews and discussions during the philosophical research, revealed that given the global north intellectual origins of current leading sustainability practices it will generally be very difficult, for researchers from that region to break free from the clutches of unintentionally hidden contingent historical powers and meanings in these practices, that continue to silo research agendas into ESG. More intriguing was a realisation that they do not have to change anything because the western philosophy is necessary and complimentary in a greater orderly set of philosophies of humanity on earth. This clarity of association at metaphysical level helped to explicate the sustainability constructs and their varied global values for input into an artistic co-creation a new sustainability framework that accommodates the rest of global human-nature philosophies.

We drew inspiration from a growing global academic challenge for Sustainability Science to synthesize a holistic and practical sustainability framework and were also powered by researcher’s global south critical and emancipatory tendency, however cultured by a holistic perspective that considers the differences in the world as equal and complimentary parts of a whole, necessary for the progress of the universe.

The novelty of the new sustainability framework is an abstract theorisation of the interaction between modern society and the environment that enables solving of sustainability challenges at the interface through innovative practical tools of the framework. The new framework reduces big talk to responsibility, action and accountability right through to the smallest piece of interaction between society and nature. It is practical, heuristic for research, integrative for governments and practitioners, generative for industry, well-structured for generative AI structured learning and embeddable for strategy where everything should flow in connecting frameworks to tell global sustainability stories.

The integrative and organising capacity of the new framework lies in its generic nature that can accommodate the varied aspirations across the world and is applicable from the smallest of activities right up to a global level linking all the hierarchies along the way, solving the smooth flow of global sustainability efforts and goals. As such it will organise and contextualise the field into globally flowing sustainability stories especially with the help of data science and generative AI hence the name of our organisation One sustainability.

Probably its most important aspect is the generative characteristic where it affords everybody an equal opportunity to be more innovative by utilising its tools focused on the interface of modern society and nature. The framework ensures sustainability accountability for every activity.

Due to the urgent nature of sustainability concerns we are taking the model into practice and at the same time organising a global research replication. Our immediate target and high impact areas are governments sustainability planning, research and education curriculum development, and large corporates sustainability strategic planning with a priority focus on the global south entities where sustainability science is lagging.

We are confident that the new framework will usher exponential growth in Sustainability Science Research and Education, spur sustainable innovation in industry and help governments plan flowing sustainability strategies and above all have a meaningful impact towards achieving 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
